This reserve lies within the Karamoja sub-region of northeastern Uganda and it is regarded as the second largest conservation area in the country after Murchison Falls National Park. It covers an area of 2788 square kilometers and lies north of Mount Elgon and currently falls under the management of Mount Elgon Conservation Area.

Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve Uganda is estimated to be 90kms away from Mbale. To get here, you drive along Mbale-Moroto route and if you are to begin your trip from Kampala, expect to spend at least 8 hours’ drive. By air, Amudat airstrip is the nearest place to land in.
